THE GIFT OF SIGHT:
Restoration of Vision

Restoration of Vision

The world only exists in your eyes. You can make it as big or as small as you want.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

In India, over 5 million persons are visually impaired, with 66.2% blind due to Cataract, and 13.4% due to Refractive Errors. 90% of those suffering from cataract are elderly. Advancing age is itself a primary risk factor for developing cataract in the eyes which clouds the eye lens, thereby impeding passage of light and leading to blurred/ limited or no vision. Although the treatment for cataract is a simple surgery, many elders in India who are diagnosed with the condition, find it difficult to access or afford the necessary medical intervention.

HelpAge India partners with leading and experienced charitable eye hospitals and organizations across India to conduct free cataract surgeries for elders enabling them to live life with dignity and independence. Cataract surgeries are conducted in a sterile medical setting while observing all healthcare protocols and statutory compliances, including mandatory pre and post-operative care.

Over the past 40 years, HelpAge India has conducted approximately 1 Million free cataract surgeries for disadvantaged older persons in partnership with nearly 400 credible and competent eye care institutions.

Refractive Errors are the second leading cause of visual impairment amongst the elderly. It occurs when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. The length of the eyeball changes in the shape of the cornea, or aging of the lens, which can cause refractive errors.

HelpAge India, through its partners reach needy patients, diagnose refraction errors and provide free t correction eyeglasses to elders that need them. With increasing life expectancy, both the prevalent cases of refractive error and the demand for treatment will continue to rise.

Keeping in mind the vulnerability of elders, during the Covid-19 pandemic, HelpAge India is adhering to all the safety and hygiene measures for all its programs on the field, like wearing face masks, regular washing & sanitization of hands, and maintaining social distancing norms at all times, to ensure everyone’s safety and protection.
